Description

The OEM wanted to replace painted MDF in this cart application with a material that would yield the required strength, cosmetic appearance and cost objectives. This cart supports, transports and stores electrosurgery equipment and accessories.

Why is this Part Innovative?

The designers carefully considered material and process options to arrive at gas counter pressure structural foam to replace painted MDF in this cart application. Structural integrity, aesthetics and hygienics were requirements. The gas counter pressure structural foam process provided an attractive part with a rib structure for rigidity. No sink marks and very limited rib read through along with the elimination of the customary splay of structural foam confirmed this process choice. The structural geometry was designed around the chosen material avoiding the need for fillers. Polypropylene material being unaffected by most cleaning solutions found in a hospital setting confirmed the material choice.

The creative combination of material and process allowed the designers to satisfy all of the requirements of this cart including their cost objective.
