The 1-Seal™ lid is a unique proprietary technology that provides packaging brands in the food industry with a sustainable, re-sealable, durable packaging solution. Using an in-mold label (IML), 1-Seal caps and seals in one step by leaving a portion of the label surface exposed inside the lid. Consequently, it eliminates the need for foil or film seal. The IML properties of the cap also eliminate the need for alternative decorative technologies, including shrink sleeve labels, pressure sensitive labels and direct labeling. Omitting foil and film for sealing as well as any post-sealing decoration technologies that may have been used reduces waste, eliminates the costs associated with other sealing and decoration materials, and eliminates steps in the manufacturing process. These properties combined provide many benefits for the brand owner, retailer and consumer.
Why is the product innovative?
Spartech Packaging designs and produces custom packaging for the food, consumer, graphics and medical markets and focuses on innovation in design, barrier, decorative and sustainable packaging solutions. The 1-Seal product eliminates the need to seal with film or foil and subsequently apply a lid. The label is integrated into the lid and is applied and sealed in one simple step. The in-mold labeling process allows for improved, more vibrant graphics and the label substrate does not deform or degrade when exposed to aqueous products. The label is integrated directly into the tray during the production process and is made from a single thermoplastic; therefore the entire package is recyclable in streams that collect polypropylene. The 1-Seal packaging solution creates many efficiencies and sustainability benefits. In the manufacturing process, the need for separate lidding and capping processes is eliminated. We believe this reduces costs, time, material waste and a manufacturer’s carbon footprint. Additionally, for hot-fill processes, the 1-Seal lid eliminates the need for a cooling bath after film sealing. Furthermore, the rectangular shape of 1-Seal packaging can reduce a brand’s shipping cube, extending efficiencies and sustainability benefits throughout the supply chain. Finally, the 1-Seal packaging solution aligns with evolving consumer lifestyles, emerging consumer expectations and packaging trends, all contributing to a food manufacturer’s brand equity. What does this mean? The 1-Seal solution is ideal for multi-serving food products. Its re-sealable closure provides a secure, air and water tight seal for guaranteed product freshness. Extending the usability of the product reduces food and material waste. 1-Seal is heat tolerant, microwavable and freezer-to-microwave ready. The easy-open lid eliminates the risk of injury from metal lids and the riddance of foil seals eliminates the risk of foil contamination during manufacturing as well as consumer use. The durability of the 1-Seal solution makes it a reusable solution, extending its lifecycle beyond the use of its original contents. Because the in-mold label does not abrade or degrade, consumers experience a continued reminder of a food manufacturer’s brand throughout the packaging product lifecycle.
